Can you outline the process of writing a book?

Several friends and relatives have told me over the past two years that I should be writing for a living. I email them several times a week with events and updates of things going on in my life. I have lots of strange investigative stories that I could tell but I have no idea where to start. Would it be best to take a course at a local college on writing...or just go ahead and try to put it all on paper first. I too think there may be something to it but having a degree in Criminal Justice and not in journalism or writing...I feel totally confused as how to start. I do know that a good house must have a blue print. If anyone can outline how I should go about this I would sure appreciate it. People who I know that actually do write have encouraged me but I dont want them to know that I have no idea on how to start. Thanks for any advice you may offer.

Plot is everything. Get books on PLOT. Without a sound, interesting, convincing plot, it's pointless. Also, get books on character development because even with a fabulous plot, if your characters are "flat," your book will bomb. Also get books on Conflict/Suspense which are crucial to keeping the reader turning the pages. Dialogue, Setting and Point of View are also important. Elements Of Style series has books on all these topics. I strongly advise getting the following from this series:

A story is a series of events that get more and more complicated, with a final resolution, to be simple about it. At the beginning of a story, unless the story is the FATE structure where the end of the story happens first...like in Carlito's Way, an inciting incident occurs which propels the action into existence. Like in Independence Day, with the invasion...that's the inciting incident. In Pretty Woman, the inciting incident is meeting Richard Gere. In Hustle & Flow, the inciting incident is D-Jay buying the casio keyboard off the crackhead. (These are movies, but novels work in the same way). After your inciting incident, you must provide ample conflict and increasing suspense to keep us wanting to continue reading, but not over the top or we won't believe it.

In other words:

Act One - Introduce all your main characters; Inciting incident. This act can be one page or fifty pages.

Act Two - Conflict, conflict, conflict. After the "problem" is posed, throw stones at your protagonist. Make the problem get worse, and worse, and worse, and when we think it can't get any worse, it gets worse.

Act Three - Resolve the problem. Tie up all the plots (subplots). Give the reader satisfaction. Most readers won't enjoy a love story where the lovers don't get to be together at the end. Sure, its avante garde, but the average reader will feel robbed.

And whatever you do, DON'T PULL A SOPRANO WTF! ENDING...LOL.

I could go on and on. Just read those books I told you and you'll be on your way.

Since you have a background in Criminal Justice, you may find genres that involve detectives, crimes, murder etc. easier to write.

Good luck and email me. I'm writing a novel myself. It's a loooong process. Don't expect to be done in a couple of months. That's the mistake I made.

I am a freshman in college. Since the 1st semester is now over and most of the books I don't think I am going to need in the future, what do you guys think is the best and fastest way to sell my textbooks? They are used and in very good condition.

Please forgive me for saying so, but your question is rather - well - incomplete. There is insufficient details to answer. Perhaps a quick call to the instructor would help. Otherwise, there is usually an appendix in the back of most textbooks with information if there is some kind of internet access for the book.

NFL and College Football Preseason: Do teams really try to win the game?

Watching pre-season football can be very disappointing as the stars only play one down or one series (in the pro's at least) Yet during the highlights the stars look disappointed when they lose. I know generally preseason is for reviewing what talent you have on the team.

Here's my question...
do you think most teams and coaches are actively trying to win pre-season games?

The brand new coaches may want to win with their bad teams to instill both a winning mindset and to score brownie points with their new employers and long suffering fans.
The 3rd game of the pre season(NFL X) is the time that the starters will be in the longest. The 4th and last NFL X game is when the good teams will pull starters the quickest to avoid injuries.
The depth of quality QB`s on a team is the single strongest winning factor,other than a coach who says that his #1`s will play for longer than usual.
Stars and top talent laden teams are just trying to avoid injury
On any given game,however, a coach may have a hidden agenda,such as getting all his 3rd and 4th string on film to make his cuts. Things can deteriorate quickly in NFL X 2nd halves.

College Mathematics Advice...?

I'm currently a freshman in college who is majoring in Mathematics. My college focuses very heavily on applied mathematics (for example, probability theory, quantitative analysis) but there is almost no pure mathematics. As someone who is very interested in math, I tried to get a basic idea of pure mathematics by looking at on line notes on Set Theory, Group Theory, Abstract Algebra...(I also looked at differential equations, even though its applied, because the college I go to doesn't offer that) but I have a very hard time understanding it. I have a feeling that I'm probably jumping around and should start with something more elementary (i.e. set theory) and move onto more complicated topics (abstract algebra etc..).
Can you recommend any particular order in which I study these topics so that I can get a solid, albeit basic, understanding in pure mathematics. Furthermore, it would much appreciated if you could recommend a website or a book that is good for self-study.

I want to find a high paying place to sell my college textbooks. All of the other places seem to rip off people trying to sell used college textbooks. I visited http://www.cashnow4books.com and they look like a legitimate place to sell my books.

Maybe ebay. Or try to find a friend or someone who may need the same book next year, do an even trade with them or sell them the book. That way you both will be making a good deal.

Book Review: A Guide For Unmarried Fathers' Rights

Id heard the stories: A scorned woman files a PFA (Protection from Abuse order) against her ex-husband. Turns out the allegations were false completely fabricated as a means of retaliation toward her former spouse. Or the story of an ex-girlfriend who alleged domestic abuse, thereby barring her childrens father from seeing them although the charges were never proven.

Yes, I know of actual cases where injustices were done to men. Being a woman, I must admit, none of them ever stopped me from sleeping. Its their turn, I would think to myself. Theyre just getting back what they put us [women] through for centuries.

And then I read Eric Legettes Closing the Curtain on Baby Mama Drama, a type of autobiographical take of his own struggles within the (in-)justice system. One can call it a handbook regarding divorced and unmarried fathers rights.

Theres always a long and a short of things. The short of my review is this: Every parent should read this book.

And the long? Well, keep reading

The review

As a writer, my first impression was that this book was written by someone who is definitely not a writer. Nor was it proofread. There are typographical and grammatical errors throughout its pages for sure.

For a certainty though, Legette loses nothing in his translation. Errors or not, the weight of his message is not diminished. And that message is clear: In the U.S., whether youre divorced, separated or single, your rights as a father doesnt amount to a hill of beans.

Legette is a natural-born storyteller: he lies naked before his readers. He has no shame and places little blame on either him or his baby mama. In the vernacular: He simply tells it like it is. And he offers no apologies for it.

A love story

Legette takes us on a journey from the moment he meets his former lover (now his baby mama). We meet a passionate young man who was in love with a girl with obvious issues. Those issues, Legette realized, were not issues he was qualified to handle.

Unfortunately, as is the case in many love affairs, the reality comes after the birth of the child. To Legettes credit, he could have dogged Baby Mama, but its apparent in his language that (1) he is much too much of a gentleman to do so; and (2) he has more regard for his daughter than to disrespect her mother.

Legette is the type of man any sane woman would appreciate.

Thin line between love and hate

By the time Legette realized he was merely a statistic in a love story gone wrong, he was faced with the knowledge that there is no such agenda as unmarried fathers rights in this country. This reality would lead to three heartbreaks:

She no longer loved him (if she ever loved him at all)

She would stop at nothing to bar him from having a relationship with his child

Neither his attorney or the judicial system were his friends and neither cared about his rights as a single father

Here comes the judge

Through the various chapters of this book Legette reveals his pain, his agony, his failures and a broken judicial system, particularly regarding the rights of divorced, separated and single fathers. Compound that with constant exhaustion (from working overtime in order to pay for the attorney) while attending college, and you got yourself a surefire mental breakdown on the horizon.

And his was coming.

Legette pours out his heart as he credits his faith in God and the support of his loving parents as the reasons he was able to endure.

Mission Impossible

Enough was enough. It was time to pull up the bootstraps.

Firing his attorney, Legette set out to find a real advocate for the cause of unmarried fathers rights. Conducting his own research and compiling materials hed run across during his years of working in the human services field, Legette realized this problem was bigger than he was.

He was determined to help others in similar situations, other fathers who faced the system in seemingly losing battles for their paternal rights. He was a man on a mission. That mission was to tell his story as only he could, detailing the judicial process and what it could mean to the cause of unmarried fathers rights.

His book became an educational tool to fathers everywhere: divorced, separated, single. In it he provides resources of who to see, where to go, what to say when you get there all in an effort to level the playing field in the battle for unmarried fathers rights. He discusses family law and where to find real sources of valuable information; how to dress and act in the courtroom; how to represent yourself in the courtroom (which cut costs drastically!); the appropriate method to use when paying child support (never in cash!); and more.

He offers parenting tips and provides a support network for potential behavior traits youll want to make note of (depression, loneliness, etc.). Legette even discusses the rate of suicide among divorced/separated fathers and more importantly what to do if you see the signs of suicidal tendencies.

There is no shortage of needed information in this book. Closing the Curtain on Baby Mama Drama is a great book for all parents to read: for fathers fighting for their rights, as well as mothers who wish to do the right thing by their children.

Of special note: Closing the Curtain on Baby Mama Drama is NOT some anti-woman/anti-mother journal; it is based on the struggles on one single father, of his faith, of his hope.

But mostly, Closing the Curtain on Baby Mama Drama is a book about the sanctity of family.

And that makes it a worthy book, indeed.

Thinking about a writing career?

I am not in college yet, but I do know it is time to start thinking about my future.

I am a really good student, and I love to write. Mostly fictional stuff, I find it hard to write captivating stories when you try to explain the migration patterns of ducks or something like that.

My parents have told me and my sister that if we don't get into the Ivy League, we need to stay around our hometown. We live in a really plain and quiet area, and the closest college nearbye is good, but no where near as good as the ivy league.

I was wondering if people could give me perspectives on writing careers like journalists, fiction author, magazine article writer, ect.

Money is also important, insight on that?

This might not be a great idea if you feel creatively challenged by mundane topics, but there is work to be had in non-fiction.

The online market, in particular, is growing and it combines great potential while having an entry bar that's not set particularly high.

It does require some roll-up-your-sleeves effort and a willingness to learn what clients need and why, but it can be lucrative and rewarding.

Online teaching in high school?

I work at a publishing company for college textbooks. However, some of our clients are high school instructors, who teach AP classes. They use our online sites http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073205818/information_center_view0/ for the students to complete their assignments. So any high school instructors using online methods for students to turn in their assignments.

I'm a French and Spanish high school teacher. Our current French publisher has had an online, end-of-chapter component for about 7 years, but the students have to print out the results and bring in the sheet. Our (newer) Spanish text has a much greater variety of review activities, plus homework options, interactive listening/speaking practice, games, and Internet links and activities. The textbook is also online.

I think most high school teachers welcome and value online instruction options. I know the next series I'll look for will have the text online, with links to every workbook page from the online text. It will have online audio pronunciation and interactive speaking, ALL the DVD videos and CD class listening activities, and I'll be able to register my classes online so they can do homework and I can receive the results through my teacher access.

Having all materials available from home will help absent students of all levels and subject areas keep up with the class, let students who leave materials in their locker do their assignments, and help educators with grading and classroom management. Give us more online!!
